Santa brings Sherlock Holmes this Christmas

This Christmas, it is pretty likely that you will be making other plans after seeing the ’sold out’ sign for AVATAR at your local theater. Just a reminder that Sherlock Holmes is opening on Christmas Day to welcome in AVATAR rejects. The early buzz on Robert Downey Jr’s Sherlock Holmes is moderatly positive. This re-imagination of a classic character is being spearheaded by talented director Guy Ritchie of Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels. The omniscient movie review website, Rotten Tomatoes, currently has it at a 72% with 36 reviews (typical total is about 130). So before you try and make a decision at the box office, check out what some of the early critics are saying:

“There is a synergistic relationship here in this movie between Director Guy Ritchie and Robert Downey Jr. that works in a grand way.”
Danny Minton, Fort Bend Sun

“For with time running out on 2009, it’s wonderful that one of the old year’s last gifts should be a reminder of the superb possibilities of blockbuster cinema.”
Richard Luck, Channel 4 Film

“[Guy Ritchie] has managed to steal hours of precious time belonging to cinemagoers everywhere for his latest silly escapade.”
Peter Bradshaw, Guardian [UK]

“Arthur Conan Doyle’s iconic Sherlock Holmes, the British detective with extraordinary deductive powers in the hands of director Guy Ritchie will disappoint many, including me.”
Louise Keller, Urban Cinefile

“A handsome, entertaining romp of a film that they really should have called Lock, Stock And Two Smoking Pipes.”
Allan Hunter, Daily Express

So it sounds like you may or may not like his film- probably will be based on your openness to the genre and Guy Ritchie’s stylistic presentation. The Babblers will let you know what we think, please let us know too! Babble Christmas!

Check out a great post one from a Babblers about his early thoughts on Sherlock Holmes.

My top 5 James Cameron movies of all time

As we approach the release of the highly anticipated and long waited AVATAR on December 18th, I thought it would be great to be reminded of some of James Cameron’s other achievements over his lifetime. AVATAR marks the grand return of Cameron to the big screen after 12 years. If you are a younger, you might not appreciate the genius of Cameron and how he shaped an entire generation of film goers. His creations became not only are some of the most profitable films in history, but some of the most iconic films in the sci-fi genre. So in honor of Cameron, here are the original trailers from my top 5 films that made him a legend.

#5 The Abyss (1989)

#4 Titanic (1997)

#3 Terminator (1984)

#2 Aliens (1986)

#1 Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991)

‘Daybreakers’ Trailer

Daybreakers (Opens Jan 8th). Not sure why this movie isn’t on the radar for many people. One of the posters I randomly grabbed up at this past year’s Comic Con was the one above. I didn’t think much of it (kinda like District 9) and automatically assumed it was another gory, horror flick.

I think I might be underestimating another film. This movie actually looks amazingly good.

Take a look at the trailer below:

Chuck returns in January

With great anticipation, the comedy/spy series Chuck returns (finally) to tv after threat of cancellation this past summer. Chuck fans rallied together and with some clever marketing campaign, was able to get it renewed for a 3rd season. BabbleOn 5 are big fans and we are looking forward to some fun “Chuck me” moments starting in January. Here is a behind the scenes and preview of season 3:

Avatar Thanator chase scene

Invictus

Invictus is an upcoming film about Nelson Mandela’s Presidency as he inspires to lead his county during the 1995 World Cup. Recognizing the racial division that separated South Africa, Nelson knew that the Rugby team could bring them together. This looks to be a perfect vehicle for te regal Morgan Freeman and the scrapper Matt Damon. With the sentimental power of Director Clint Eastwood, this is sure to be a powerful movie. Invictus comes out December 11th.

Twilight: New Moon

twilight-new-moon-teaser-movie-poster

With the new Twilight movie coming up, I thought I’d do a short post covering what you need to know about this new sequel. ‘New Moon’ is the 2nd book in Stephenie Meyer’s popular Fantasy-romance series called ‘Twilight’ and releases November 20th.

“The film will star Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner, reprising their roles as Bella Swan, Edward Cullen, and Jacob Black, respectively.” – Wikipedia

A short synopsis:

“After Bella recovers from the vampire attack that almost claimed her life, she looks to celebrate her birthday with Edward and his family. However, a minor accident during the festivities results in Bella’s blood being shed, a sight that proves too intense for the Cullens, who decide to leave the town of Forks, Washington for Bella and Edward’s sake. Initially heartbroken, Bella finds a form of comfort in reckless living, as well as an even-closer friendship with Jacob Black. Danger in different forms awaits.” – IMDB

EdwardCullen Taylor-Lautner

Even though I can’t help but roll my eyes at the many women and gay men obsessed with the series, I have to admit I understand the appeal.

Prince of Persia: First Trailer

My first impressions of the trailer is that it looks too much like ‘The Mummy’ or ‘National Treasure’. I really hope it doesn’t fall into the same formula other Jerry Bruckheimer movies do. The game itself was great to play but I just feel like other video game adaptations in the past, it is doomed to fail miserably.
