UPDATE on Pluto’s heart

Hee hee, Pluto DOES know the way to my heart~

Back in March NASA put out a survey on OurPluto.org asking the public to think up names for all of the new geologic features they will find on Pluto and its four moons-Styx, Nix, Hydra and Kereberos. They released the list of top contenders yesterday and let me tell you, it is the best list of baby/monument names one could ask for.

ALL the geeks came out to play in May. There were a number of categories, but in each one our geek flag flew proudly. Naming everything and everyone from Star Wars, to Lord of the Rings, to Aliens, Firefly, Dr. Who, Star Trek, etc. etc. It is a VERY good looking list of names, and I hope that Pluto has 9 mountains named; Mal, Wash, Zoe, Kaylee, Jayne, Inara, Book, River, and Simon-that form a ring around a heart shaped basin that they will call Serenity. PUT IT IN THE BOOKS NASA!

PLUTO LOVES US!

Good ol’ Pluto. Even though we booted you out of the planet club, your huge heart still abounds. SO KEWT!

No seriously, it’s a huge heart. 1,200 miles across in fact. A NASA probe, from the New Horizons spacecraft, took the adorable picture from 5 million miles away. NASA is hoping that as the spacecraft gets closer they’ll be able to discern more of the peculiar surface features that make up this ADORABLE planet.
