The first bonafide ‘summer blockbuster’ has arrived!
The super sequel IRON MAN 2 had the fifth-largest opening weekend on record with $133 million, behind Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest ($135m), Twilight Saga: New Moon ($142m), Spider-Man 3 ($151m), and The Dark Knight ($158m). The film grossed $10.2 million in IMAX theaters alone, which is a new record. The previous record was held by Star Trek, which had earned $8.2 million in IMAX over the same weekend last year. The film’s worldwide weekend earning now stands at $194 million. The cumulative earning of the Paramount sequel is now $327 million.
As expected, the competition was almost non-existant as IRON MAN totally dominated the box office. Besides Robin Hood, there is not much to stand in the way of IRON MAN for the next few weeks. Read our review of IRON MAN 2.
